The Story of Big Elm Brewing

The fall of 2012 marked the first batch of beer brewed at Big Elm Brewing. Since then, the neighborhood hot spot has been bringing fresh, quality beer to the Berkshires. Before this point and time, the owners (Bill and Christine) were working at other brewing companies to garner their skills. They actually met at Victory Brewing Company in 2003 and then opened Pittsfield Brew Works in 2005. After five years at this brewpub, they left the business to just focus on quality beer (as well as a family on the way). Big Elm Brewery was the result, named for a big elm tree at the end of the street that stood for almost 400 years. Though the elm is now gone, Big Elm Brewing seeks to embody the spirit of what it meant by giving people something to gather around and enjoy each other’s’ company with!

Craft Beers

There are a variety of delicious craft beers that you can experience at Big Elm Brewing during your Berkshires adventures. The Big Elm 413 Farmhouse Ale is a Belgian ale brewed with barley, wheat, chamomile, orange zest, and hops. Then, the double dry-hopped Big Elm IPA offers a West Coast style with a hint of malt to back up the bitters. The Gerry Dog Stout is an oatmeal stout that’s easy to drink for those who usually veer away from the dark side. The Big Elm American Lager is brewed with corn, barley, hops, water, and yeast that gives a light, simple sweetness. And finally, the Big Elm Lion’s Ale is a smooth English-style amber that pairs well with any meal during any season. There are also seasonal specialties available throughout the year!
