Tanglewood Music Festival 2018Tickets for Tanglewood Music Festival 2018 are set to go on sale January 28th, 2018. This year celebrates Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday through his works and a special gala evening on August 25th.

“Bernstein Centennial Summer — Celebrating Lenny at Tanglewood!” is the title of this year’s summer music festival. Though it won’t be all Lenny, all the time, the season features a wide array of the composer/conductor’s works.

Leonard Bernstein had a close relationship with the Boston Symphony Orchestra that spanned fifty years. He was a member of the first Tanglewood class in 1940 and a protégé of BSO conductor, Serge Koussevitzky. In 1990, he conducted his final final concerts with the BSO and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.

Performances of his works at Tanglewood Music Festival 2018 will include the concert pieces Chichester Psalms, Songfest, The Serenade, and Divertimento for Orchestra. Bernstein’s ballet scores are not ignored, either. Facsimile, Fancy Free, and of course, Candide will see performances at this year’s festival. A special Young People’s Concert will be lead by Leonard Bernstein’s daughter, Jamie Bernstein.

Bernstein’s operas and Broadway hits are also represented. Performances of Trouble in Tahiti, A Quiet Place, and On the Town are all on the schedule. Seeing the Oscar-winning film West Side Story in high def large screen and backed by the BSO’s live score is sure to be a real highlight of the summer.

It all culminates on August 25th – Bernstein’s birthday – with a gala performance you do not want to miss.

The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood will see conductors Andris Nelsons, Christoph Eschenbach, Keith Lockhart, Michael Tilson Thomas, and John Williams. The evening also features an astonishing array of guest artists, including Audra McDonald, Midori, Yo-Yo Ma, Susan Graham, and Thomas Hampson. Mmbers of numerous other orchestras with which Bernstein maintained close associations will also be a part of this gala event.

Tanglewood Music Festival 2018 will also feature performances by Lang Lang, Rudolf Buchbinder, Yuja Wang, and Yefim Bronfman. Puccini’s La Bohème will see a complete, semi-staged performance with soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Piotr Beczała. The 2018 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series includes Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and two shows with James Taylor and his all-star band.
