Tanglewood Popular Artists Series 2017

What do David Sedaris and Natalie Merchant have in common? They’re both part of the 2017 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series!

Tanglewood may be the summer home to the BSO but their summer festival isn’t just classical music. The Tanglewood Popular Artists Series brings big names from the world of rock, pop, and jazz to the Berkshires’ stage, too!

If you plan to be in the Berkshires this summer, you’ll want to set aside some time for Tanglewood. The festival routinely brings some of the brightest stars of the musical firmament to the Berkshires.

The Tanglewood Popular Artists Series has featured legends as Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Jackson Browne, Lady Gaga, and James Taylor. The Tanglewood Popular Artists Series generates lots of anticipation and surprises each year – and this year is no different!

A number of performance dates that have yet to be announced, including  July 3rd, 4th, and Labor Day Weekend. James Taylor, in particular – a regular guest for the series – is noticeably absent from the current schedule. Updates on the full schedule for the Tanglewood Popular Artists Series are imminent. 2017 Tanglewood Popular Artists Series Schedule

June 18th – “Jaws in Concert” – 8pm
The original summer movie blockbuster whose Academy Award®-winning score made John Williams a household name. Join Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops as they perform the ultimate film-with-live-orchestra experience!

July 2nd – Natalie Merchant – 7pm
Singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant brings her distinctive voice and style to the Koussevitzky Music Shed for her Tanglewood debut! Natalie Merchant began her career with the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981, and has released seven solo albums.

July 8th – “Sondheim on Sondheim” – 8pm
A retrospective of the life and work of musical theater’s greatest living composer and lyricist. Sondheim on Sondheim is told through his own words via film, live performers, and music. This year’s performance includes lush new arrangements for full orchestra.

August 1st – Tanglewood on Parade – 8pm
Tanglewood on Parade is the festival’s annual day-long celebration of music. It features performances and festivities throughout the afternoon and evening. The event closes with the cannons and bells of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and a grand fireworks display!

August 19th – “John Williams’ Film Night” – 8pm
John Williams’ Film Night has long been one of Tanglewood’s most popular evenings. The program will feature classic cinema scores from the Harry Potter series, “Lincoln,” “Far and Away,” and “E.T.”.

August 20th – An Evening with David Sedaris – 8pm
David Sedaris is an American humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor. Sedaris’ books include “Naked,” “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” and “When You Are Engulfed in Flames”. This event celebrates the release of his new book “Theft By Finding”.

September 1st – Avett Brothers – 7pm
The Avett Brothers are an American folk-rock band from Concord, North Carolina. Their ninth studio album, “True Sadness,” released in 2016, topped the Billboard charts and scored two Grammy nominations. This concert is their Tanglewood debut.
