Greylock seen from North Adams" hspace="5" />In the Berkshires, we’re proud to claim the tallest peak in Massachusetts, Mt. Greylock. This weekend the new road to the summit will open for the season, and Bascom Lodge opens for visitors as well. At the summit of Mt. Greylock, the lodge offers a restaurant, a gift shop, hiking information, but most especially the view! Mt. Greylock was supposedly Herman Melville’s visual inspiration for “Moby Dick,” because he viewed its whale-like shape from his home.

The opening will be celebrated Saturday and Sunday, May 15th and 16th, with a series of Native American performances. Information at 413-743-1591. Mt. Greylock is about 1/2 hour’s ride from Brook Farm Inn, our Lenox B&B,

This afternoon, after our weekend guests checked out we went exploring for new and beautiful places to hike. We found one only 20-25 minutes from Brook Farm Inn called Wahconah Falls. It is located on the Dalton/Windsor line in Wahconah Falls State Park just off Route 9. The falls dive deeply over ledges below the Windsor Reservoir. Hiking trails start from the large parking lot and meander through the woods along the side of the brook which is a tributary of the Housatonic River. The setting is nature at its best. The hike is easy and the scenery will make you stop and stare. It’s easy to see how this park can make for a great picnic spot in warm weather.

When guests of the inn ask about hiking trails we offer maps and books of the numerous places to visit. We have been visitors or residents of the Berkshires for more than 25 years and we are still discovering places to visit and things to do. Take some time away from the office and the daily grind. Call us and book some time to enjoy the natural beauty of the Berkshires.

When guests ask where they should hike, our favorite suggestion is Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, a Mass Audubon property. It’s minutes from Brook Farm Inn, and you can choose from 7 miles of well-marked trails. Some trails are more challenging than others, but all offer the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the Berkshires. You can hike to the summit of Lenox Mountain (a young couple staying at Brook Farm Inn recently got engaged there!) or stroll around the ponds and see the beaver lodges. This is a destination for any season.
