We had the distinct pleasure recently of driving the newly paved road to Bascom Lodge, at the top of Mt. Greylock.  It’s only 1/2 hour from our Lenox B&B, and we recommend this jaunt to anyone who wants to hike part of the Appalachian Trail, or just to see the spectacular views.

At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. Rising above the surrounding Berkshire landscape, it provides  dramatic views of 60-90 miles distant. It became Massachusetts’ first wilderness state park  in 1898.  A visitor center at the base of the mountain provides information, and a gorgeous wooded drive of about 20 minutes brings you to the top. 

Bascom Lodge is very rustic, but we had a great lunch there.  Guests of Brook Farm Inn recently went there for dinner and raved about it.  $25 per person provides soup, salad, entree and dessert.– and a fabulous starry night sky.   Bring your own wine.  Reservations are needed for dinner.

Additionally, we were visited by an indigo bunting and a pileated woodpecker visited the tree stump in our back yard.

After living most of my life in urban areas where wildlife was squirrels and pigeons I am still amazed (even after 10 years) at the variety of birds we have in the Berkshires.

Today we had a visit from our friends Brian and Charlotte from Aspinwall Adult Equestrian Center. They stopped by on two beautiful Icelandic horses. They dropped off some brochures for Berkshire Horseback Adventures. Many of our guests enjoy riding along the beautiful shaded trails of Kennedy Park and Lenox Mountain. You can enjoy breathtaking views of Berkshire County. On a clear day you can see the Catskill Mountains of New York and the Green Mountains of Vermont. All this while mounted on a well trained horse guided by a professional horseman.The stables are located right here in Lenox MA near Brook Farm Inn. Berkshire Horseback has a full menu of experiences. You can choose from one hour to overnight camping trips.

Greylock seen from North AdamsIn the Berkshires, we’re proud to claim the tallest peak in Massachusetts, Mt. Greylock.  This weekend the new road to the summit will open for the season, and Bascom Lodge opens for visitors as well.  At the summit of Mt. Greylock, the lodge offers a restaurant, a gift shop, hiking information, but most especially the view!  Mt. Greylock was supposedly Herman Melville’s visual inspiration for “Moby Dick,” because he viewed its whale-like shape from his home.

The opening will be celebrated Saturday and Sunday, May 15th and 16th, with a series of Native American performances.  Information at 413-743-1591.  Mt. Greylock is about 1/2 hour’s ride from Brook Farm Inn, our Lenox B&B,

Throughout the Berkshires the golf courses are beginning to open. Yesterday, I played my first round of the year at my favorite course, Greenock Country Club. The beautiful award winning nine hole course had a couple of damp spots but the drainage work they did last year made the playing condition excellent. My first drive went right down the center of the fairway about 220 yards. My next shot went over the green into the rough. The definition of golf… “a good walk spoiled.”
Egremont Country Club, Pontoosuc Lake Country Club and Skyline Country Club are all open to the public and in good condition. Cranwell Golf Course will be open soon. Cranwell is the closest course to Brook Farm Inn (1 mile away), our Lenox Bed and Breakfast. Watch our blog for golf specials as the season gets into full swing.

A property of the Trustees of the Reservations, Notchview offers 30 km of scenic trails to hike, ski, skate or snowshoe this winter. On Jan 9th they host Winter Trail Days with free snowshoes and trail passes for two hour periods.  They’ll also be offering free cross-country ski and skate lessons, a wax clinic and a snowshoe hike.
