The Mount was the estate of famed author, Edith Wharton. Located in Lenox, MA, it’s near our inn. The Mount will open for the 2014 season on Saturday, May 3rd. Visitors can enjoy a guided tour through the mansion and amble the acres of breathtaking formal gardens, all designed by the author herself. We’re told that Edith Wharton considered herself better at gardening than at writing, so imagine how lovely the gardens can be!
Indoors, a highlight of the tour is the library. Several years ago, The Mount was able to purchase Edith Wharton’s own collection and bring it home, where visitors can see her own margin notes and inscriptions from other famous authors.
In addition, The Mount offers a terrace café and a store with books and charming souvenirs. Guests can rest after their tour, while having food and drinks on the terrace overlooking the gardens.
We’ve been to The Mount many times, yet each season brings new programs and exhibits. There are many reasons to return in 2014. This year we look forward to the Backstairs Tours, about the lives of those who ran the estate. Tickets include a glass of champagne! In addition, visitors will enjoy the Kitchen Stories exhibit about the early 1900’s kitchen.
There will be an outdoors sculpture exhibit, as well as sketches by Edith Wharton herself in the indoor exhibit space.
Programs at The Mount abound. There’s the Monday Lecture Series for one — every Monday from July 7 through August 25, a well-known authors will speak about their recent works. Then there’s Wharton on Wednesdays. This program is at 5:00 June through August, and takes place on the terrace where Wharton’s short stories are read by professional actors.
At Brook Farm Inn, we are thrilled to have this Western Massachusetts Berkshires gem nearby and look forward to sharing it with our guests.
